Job Description

The Civil Engineer is responsible for a variety of Civil Engineering projects focused on sanitation and civil site in both rural and urban Alaska.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in marketing, writing proposals, winning work, and developing and maintaining client relationships.
  • Initiate, plan, execute, and close small to medium size transportation and/or site civil projects.
  • Perform design tasks and/or lead a design team on civil projects; including water and sewer, landfill, general utility; and various site civil development projects.
  • Coordinate the work of a design team and outside consultants to develop Plans, Specifications and Estimate packages for multiple projects and a variety of clients.
  • Establish and maintain client relationships; ensure client satisfaction; ensure client objectives are met.
  • Train and mentor young professionals.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE) required.
  • Alaska Professional Engineer registration required.
  • Minimum of 5 years engineering experience required, with a background in sanitation and/or site civil design.
  • Arctic or rural Alaskan experience preferred but not required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience managing small or large projects and professional staff required.
  • Solid understanding of civil design and construction standards, and environmental conditions and constraints.
  • Proven history of meeting project deadlines and budgets.
  • Demonstrated skills developing relationships with municipal and state agencies in support of transportation and/or site civil projects.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D and MS software applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with clients, staff and management.
  • Adaptability and ability to respond quickly and accurately under pressure.
  • Must be willing and able to travel occasionally to remote locations in Alaska, some of which includes travel in small aircraft.
  • A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors - environmentally controlled; requires most or all work to be done inside.

Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually that of a standard office atmosphere.

Description of environment: Office building with standard office environment.

Physical requirements:  Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: Employee may travel up to 25% to various locations within the U.S. and/or remote locations and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes and ATVs.
