Job Description

Responsible for applying mechanical design and engineering skills to a variety of diverse and challenging projects throughout Alaska’s utility, commercial and industrial markets in a multi-disciplinary environment. 

Responsibilities

  • Perform lead mechanical engineer responsibilities for design projects.
  • Performs process piping and HVAC system designs.
  • Performs mechanical design calculations and reports.
  • Performs mechanical equipment sizing and selections.
  • Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.
  • Serves as a project engineer on larger projects.
  • Serves as a project manager and as a designated client contact on smaller projects.
  • Prepares design computations and quantity estimates.
  • Attends client meetings.
  • Analyzes reports, drawings, blueprints, maps, and tests to plan and design project.
  • Prepares or modifies reports, specifications, plans, schedules and for design project.
  • Instructs draftspersons/technicians to convert designs to working drawings.
  • Visits construction sites to monitor progress and other duties per the contract documents.
  • Responsible for timely completion of assigned projects.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university required.
  • Alaska Professional Engineer registration.
  • Minimum ten (10) years experience in mechanical engineering, experience with the A/E design process and specifications leading to construction documents preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) year experience with AutoCAD required. Experience with AutoCAD AutoPlant, Solidworks or Revit is preferred.
  • Experience in performing design calculations and preparing equipment or material specifications.
  • Experience sizing piping and ductwork
  • Experience selecting pumps, valves and processing piping components
  • Experience performing HVAC calculations and selecting air handing equipment
  • Experience sizing boilers, water heaters and heat exchangers.
  • Experience creating system diagrams as well as piping & instrumentation diagrams
  • Experience preparing graphical representations of designs.
  • Experience with all phases of project management and engineering deliverable production.
  • Experience in project delivery of Alaska projects.
  • Experience in budgeting, scheduling, planning, design specification and working drawings.
  • Experience with having project authority to direct, control and monitor all activities.
  • Working knowledge of applicable mechanical, plumbing and design codes and arctic design.
  • Demonstrated success as engineer of record on projects valued up to $10M.
  • Must be able to travel to remote locations in rural Alaska and arctic environment as needed.
  • Commercial, state and federal facility design desirable.
  • Industrial, oil and gas facility design desirable.
  • Advanced skillset with MS Office software; including MS Word, and Excel.
  • Project management professional, earned value project management experience preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors/Outdoors – occasional exposure to moderate to harsh weather conditions. Requires work to be done both inside and outside.

Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually mild to moderate.  May occasionally be on a construction site setting with moving equipment and vehicles.

Description of environment: Office building with standard office environment.  Occasionally required to be on location at construction/project sites.

Physical requirements:  Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: Employee will travel to remote areas and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes and ATVs. Number of trips may vary but maybe between 6 and 12 trips, annually; most are two to three days in duration.
